Standing Committee

The Standing Committee of the Bangladesh Photographic Society (BPS) serves as a key advisory and decision-making body within the organization. Comprising esteemed members of the photographic community, the committee is responsible for guiding the society’s strategic direction, overseeing major initiatives, and promoting and developing the photographic arts in Bangladesh.

Nafis Ahmed Nadvi, Hon.FBPS

Chief of the Committee

Born on March 1, 1958, Nafis Ahmed Nadvi is a distinguished Bangladeshi photographer renowned for his contributions to the art of photography. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Dhaka University in 1982 and has been an active member of the Bangladesh Photographic Society (BPS), where he was honored with a fellowship in 2010. Throughout his career, Nadvi has received numerous accolades, including the first prize and gold medal at the 2nd National Photo Contest organized by BPS in 1981-1982, and the ACCU Prize at the 8th Photo Contest in Asia and the Pacific in Japan in 1983.
Nadvi’s work has been showcased both nationally and internationally, reflecting his dedication to capturing the essence of Bangladeshi life and culture. In 1981, he captured a compelling image of a convoy of oxcarts in Rangpur, Bangladesh, exemplifying his talent for documenting everyday scenes with artistic depth. Beyond his photographic endeavors, Nadvi has served as a judge for various photography competitions, including the 5th BPS International Photography Competition and Exhibition. His commitment to the photographic community and his artistic achievements have solidified his reputation as a leading figure in Bangladeshi photography.

Kaiser Alam, Hon.FBPS

Kaiser Alam is a distinguished Bangladeshi photographer renowned for his exceptional contributions to the art of photography. As the operator of Manna’s Studio, one of the largest and most well-equipped photo studios in Bangladesh, he has played a pivotal role in advancing photographic excellence in the region. Under his leadership, the studio has maintained a legacy of quality and innovation, offering a virtual platform for enhanced imaging and pioneering online photo printing services in the country.
Throughout his illustrious career, Alam has garnered numerous international awards, reflecting his dedication to capturing compelling visual narratives. His expertise is further recognized through his role as an honorary fellow of the Bangladesh Photographic Society (Hon’ FBPS) and his participation as a judge in various national and international photography contests. Beyond his professional achievements, Alam actively engages with the community, sharing his work and insights on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, thereby inspiring both emerging and established photographers.

Rafiqul Islam, Hon.FBPS

Rafiqul Islam is a distinguished Bangladeshi photographer whose career transitioned from graphic design in the 1980s to professional photography in the early 1990s. He honed his craft by obtaining a diploma from the Begart Institute of Photography under the mentorship of M. A. Beg and furthered his education at the New York Institute of Photography in 1991-92. During his time in the United States, Rafiqul gained valuable experience in advertising photography, which he brought back to Bangladesh in 1993, collaborating with leading advertising agencies and corporate clients.
In addition to his commercial work, Rafiqul is a passionate educator and author. He founded Prism in 1993, initially focusing on advertising photography and later expanding into publications and training by 1998. Through Prism, he offers specialized photographic training courses and has published four books on various aspects of photography, aiming to enhance the skills of photographers at all levels.

Shankar Shawjal, Hon.FBPS

Shankar Shawjal is a noted media personality, photographer and lyricist. Shawjal grew up in Mothbaria, in Pirojpur district. As a child, he was captivated by the bounties of nature in rural Bengal. “Nature is part and parcel of my life. I have always been fascinated by nature and it gives me bliss. I believe that nature in our country has a unique, incomparable beauty. Each season has an individual aura and a spectrum of colors is visible in our natural world. When I want to express myself, I let nature take over my senses. So, nature is the major inspiration for all of my creative works,” said Shawjal.

Shafiqul Alam

Photographer and videographer Shafiqul Alam began his journey in photography in 1980. He received training from the Begart Institute of Photography, the Institute of Video and Film, and Pathshala South Asian Institute of Photography.
A permanent council member and lifetime member of the Bangladesh Photographic Society, Shafiqul Alam is also serving as the principal of the Bangladesh Photographic Institute. Before 1990, he was a member of the BPS Executive Committee and served as the Exhibition Secretary and Joint Secretary.

Ashfaque Ahmed

Ashfaque Ahmed is an art photographer. He has been with BPS since 2011. Has traveled to Indonesia Turkey and India for FIAP meetings and Congress. A couple of his photographs have been accepted for the National event of BPS. His other interests include short filmmaking. He has also produced commercial films. He indulges in arts and crafts design too.

B K S Inan

B. K. S. Inan, a BUET-trained architect (1986) and long‑time architecture teacher (now at BRAC University), pioneered CAD instruction in Bangladesh’s architectural education.
He is a seasoned architectural and documentary photographer, active in the field since 1966, whose black‑and‑white works have been exhibited widely — from Sunderbans series to international shows.
Inan has served as an advisor to the Bangladesh Photographic Society, co‑founding photographic collectives like Creative Photographers and Third Eye, and mentoring emerging photographers through workshops and BPS events

Imtiaz Alam Beg is a trailblazing Bangladeshi photographer who defined the genre of band photography in the 1990s and beyond. As director and educator at Begart Institute and BPI, and through deep-rooted involvement with BPS, he continues advancing photography as both a professional craft and a cultural movement in Bangladesh.
